They didn't find it offensive . The American publisher thought that Sorcerer's sounded more exciting and that they wouldn't know what a Philosopher was so he suggested it was changed and J.K. Rowling, at the time, agreed.

She has stated she regretted the change and if she had been in a better position she would have said no.
