Episode IV: Return of the Jedi begins with R2-D2 and C-3PO meeting Jabba the Hutt in his Tatooine Palace. They carry a mesage from Luke Skywalker, offering them as a bounty for his friend Han Solo, who is frozen in carbonite. Jabba refuses, yet puts the droids to work for him. Later a bounty hunter shows up to the collect the bounty for Chewbacca, who is propmtly put into a cell. It is also revealed that Lando is in disguise as a guard. That night, the bounty hunter releases Han, who now is blind, from the carbonite and reveales herself to be Princess Leia Organa. But the two lovers awaken Jabba. Han becomes Chewie's cellmate and Leia gets chained to Jabba. Luke now tries to free his captive friends. After negotiatians with Jabba fail, he falls into the pit of the rancor. After escaping and killing the rancor, Jabba decrees that Han, Chewie, and Luke will be cast into the Pit of Carkoon, nesting grounds of the Sarlaac. Jabba and his entourage are abourd his sail barge, and the captives are on heavily guarded skiffs. As they are about to be thrown in, R2 trows Luke his lightsaber and a skirmiss ensues. All the guards eventually fall in, including bounty hunter and personal enemy of Han, Boba Fett. Leia, meanwhile, strangles Jabba and is rescued by Luke. Lando almost falls into the pit but is rescued in the nick of time. The barge is destoyed and all the heroes escape. Luke and R2 return to Dagobah so Luke can finish his Jedi training under Yoda. Yoda, on the verge of death, says Luke must face Darth Vader, his father. Yoda's dying words are: "There is another Skywalker." As luke exits the hut Obi-Wan Kenobi's ghost appears. The troopers crash and leia falls off, separated from Luke. He gets back to the others but she is discovered by an inquisitive yet cautious native (an Ewok). He leads her to his village. The others get caught in an Ewok trap when Chewie tries to get a carcass. The Ewoks capture them but believe 3PO is a god. Luke, Han and Chewie are to the main couse of a dinner in 3PO's honor. The Ewoks are eventually convinced to release them and agree to help. As 3PO retells their story, Luke tells Leia they are siblings and their father is Vader. Luke surrenders so he can confront Vader who now is on the moon. After a brief conversation they head to the Death Star and the Emperor. At the shield generator one Ewok hops on to a bike and takes two troopers with him, while the remaining one is captured. They make it inside and capture many troopers, only to be captured by hundreds more. Outside the Ewoks launch a supise attack, and a massive battle unfolds. The Ewoks use very inovative methods of fighting, and the Imperial army is eventually defeated and the generator destoyed. How ever the battle in space is already raging. Several ships from both sides are destoyed but Rebel fighters make it into the Death Star. On board Luke is taken to the Emperor and is tepmted to join the dark side as he watches the battle take place. Unable to take it he reaches to kill the Emperor but is stopped by Vader and both lock into deadly combat. During a lull, while Luke is hiding, Vader reads his mind to discover Leia is his daughter, then unbeknownst to him. After suggest to bring her to the dark side Luke comes out and lashes out in a furious assalt on Vader. After cutting Vader's hand off he notices it is mechanical, just like his own. He throws away his lightsaber convinced now he will not kill Vader or the Emperor. But now Palpatine unleashes the lethally devastating Sith lightning. Torn between his loyalty to his Emperor and his love for his son, Vader throws Palpatine down the elevator shaft, himself now dying. Dragging Vader, Luke makes it to the hangar. There Vader requests that his mask be removed so he can see Luke with his own eyes as he is about to die. As he breaths his last the Death Star's reactor is destoyed. Luke, as well as Lando barely escape the Explosion. The Empire now all but destoyed, the entire galaxy rejoices with the celebrating Rebellion, dancing Ewoks, and the smiling ghosts of Anakin, Yoda, and Obi- Wan.

Darth Vader (Anakin Skywalker) represents the father of Luke Skywalker, but in movies 4,5, and 6, he represents more of a negative role model to Luke and Leah. He is the basic result of what happens if Luke were to join the dark side. You can tell this connection in the final movie when Luke and Darth's hands are cut off but both show zapping robotics coming out of their arms, which is a very powerfull moment in the movie. I don't think it was really done intentionally. But then again, Vader was prepared to do anything to try and convince Luke to join him in the Dark Side.Actually:This is very brief and basic.This was a form of foreshadowing, a way to illustrate the similarity between Anakin/Vader and Luke. We see in Episode three how Anakin is consumed by rage and succumbs to the dark side, and in karmic fashion loses his limbs, symbolically consumed in fire. With the perception that he caused Padme's death, Vader (Anakin is now stripped away) gives up the last of his humanity as he screams in grief. In his battles with the older Vader, Luke is losing his grip on his own humanity and is giving in to his own anger. The positive influences in his life, Obiwan, Yoda, Leia, Han, C3PO and R2, even his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, all help to keep him anchored, something Anakin never had as he becomes Vader. This is illustrated in Episode V, when Luke is hanging from the antenna below Cloud City, he visibly gives up the rage and collapses into the arms of Lando and is rescued, both physically and spiritually, through the open hatch of the Millennium Falcon.

However before that Darth Vader had a secret apprentice (not in any of the movies) he called starkiller (real name Galen Marek) whome he recruited on Kashyyyk when he went there to kill a jedi named Kento Marek (Galen's father) anyways starkiller was trained by Vader and thenchallenged to kill three remaining jedi Rham Kota, (the leader of his own miltia that fought the empire) Kazzadan Paratis (a crazed jedi who took refuge on the planet Raxus Prime and then built his own force sesitive robots) and lastly Shaark Ti (A jedi member was on the jedi consil who took refuge on felushia and trained her own apprentice Maris Brood. (who is mentioned later in better detail) Once Starkiller defeats all the jedis he is betrayed by Vader and then hes swears to seek vengence by starting a rebelion and deystroying the sith with there own power. First he set off to cloud city to find Rahm Kota who didn't die in his duel with starkiller but instead was only blinded. So once Kota is found starkiller goes to kashyyyk where he finds princess leia and rescues the wookies from becoming slaves on the death star. Then he travels to Felucia once again to find Bail Organa and rescue him but he finds Maris Brood holding him hostage but Maris has become filled with rage and hate and she attacks starkiller. he defeats her (defeat not kill) and saves Bail Organa. Now for reasons I'm not sure of starkiller goes back to raxus prime to kill a bunch of empire scum I guess but he also pulls a giant star destroyer out of the sky with the force. Then Starkiller, Kota, Leia, Bail, and two other people brought by Bail come together to discuss the creation of a rebelion when they are interupted by Darth Vader and his troops who then capture Kota bail leia and the two other people leaving only starkiller his training droid proxy and starkillers hot pilot who hes in love with. starkiller finally believes hes ready he goes to the death star to face Darth Vader and Darth sidious.upon reaching Vader starkiller defeats him but Darth sidious temps him to kill Vader and join him as a sith. now what realy happened was starkiller attacked Darth sidious but didn't kill him cause it would put him on the path of evil and Darth sidious then tries to kill starkillers friend but starkiller holds him off whiles his friends escape and he dies in a blast of Darth sidious' lightning and his friends create the rebel alliance and use his family crest as their insignia. we think darth vader is that big ugly guy in the black costume? well thats half true. darth vader decided to join the dark side of the force because chancellor palpatine convinced him the jedi are evil. he also made anikan change his name into darth vader as he said, " henforth, you shall be known as Darth Vader." he went and tried to kill Obi Wan kenobi, but failed and obi won cut his limbs and he fell into lava. palpatine found him and gave him a robot suit so he could survive. -- I don't wish to edit the first answer. It answers the question of HOW did Anakin Skywalker become Darth Vader, but not really why. It is not clear to me why Anakin gave up hope and signed on with Palpatine (or Darth Sidious). Was he manipulated mentally by Palpatine? Was he just stupid? I mean he had all this Jedi training and had done so much good, why throw it all away, even if he felt he'd blamed for the death of Mace Windu? I mean it's understandable that his role in Mace Windu's death (he cut off Windu's hand as Windu was about kill Palpatine/Siduous, and then Sidious turned on Windu) could cause him grief. But then. right then, he submitted to Sidious right away knowing fully well he had been manipulated by him all along. Why trust a manipulator? Later comic books and novels have explored why he did give into the dark side a bit. Let's assume he was SO confused by Windu's death that in a moment of weakness gave into Palpatine/Sidious believing Sidious could save Padme's life. Yet he goes on and fights Kenobi and kills all the Jedi children and goes after all the Jedi in a matter of hours/days while ALL HIS LIFE he had been good and killing the Jedi enemies. So one answer is that he felt that by being Darth Vader and biding his time, he could kill Palpatine/Sidious and eventually take over the Empire and make it to his image (along with Luke, later on). But why be so brutal about it? Luke Skywalker (as well as Cade Skywalker, a 150+/- 10 years later) also became the Emperor's apprentice for a short while, but always was sabotaging the Emperor's efforts. In contrast, Vader seems to take pleasure in going against everything that he was taught and there is no explanation given as to why. In the end, the force judges his final set of actions, helping kill Palpatine for the first time (presumably Palpatine was already in a cloned body but had never been really killed until then by anyone yet), along with all the cumulative good he did as Jedi, to be enough to give him redemption and he joins with Yoda and Kenobi. The implication is that there was always good in him, but yet for a long while, ~20 years or so, Anakin Skywalker's Jedi training is barely present while Vader manifests his psychopathic self. So the answer to "why" I think must lie in some kind of a split personality disorder. Anakin Skywalker was really two people, almost equally in balance with both light and dark, and when he was with the dark side, the light side was excluded entirely. I say "almost" because in the end he is with Yoda and Kenobi in light side heaven. So there is at least a small, yet significant, tilt even as he brings balance to the force for a brief while (almost all the Jedi except his son are killed; the Emperor who embodies the dark side is dead) and fulfills the prophecy of the chosen one. It would be fun to psychoanalyse both Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader and see what comes out of it. :)
