Sherlock Holmes is so intelligent because he uses his brilliant powers of deducation. He simply notices certain things about certain scenes or peoples, and he uses those gathered facts to deduce the answer or solution he might be looking for.

This isnt saying he doesn't have any prior knowlege of the world, he is still a wonderfully educated being. What makes him special is that he has a keen eye to match his equally as keen intuition.

Of course by this logic, every on of us could be the next Sherlock Holmes, all we have to do is not look but noticeour surroundings (or of couse become a fictional character).
