In my search fr the same answer, I came across www.collectiblestoday.com who says they are the official site for the hamilton collection (true?). Anway, one of their frequently asked questions was how to know the value of a collectiible. They recommended trying the CIB - Collectors Information Bureau. http://www.collectorsinfo.com/ CIB issues, for a price (sorry, not free), online and printed price guides for many collectibles, including Hamilton Plates. I didn't buy the guide because I didn't want to spend money at the time..but it's an answer you can check out for yourself..see what you think of them Sometimes a plate is worth whatever the market (ebay etc..) is paying..or whatever it's worth to a buyer..but you probably already know that and want something more conclusive.. Good luck.
