Harry Potter wasn't really looking for the philosopher's stone. He was curious about what Fluffy was guarding, but only after he thought Severus Snape was trying to steal it. Harry then went down the trapdoor not to get the philosopher's stone, but to prevent Voldemort from getting it.

Severus Snape took an instant dislike to Harry because of his relationship with James Potter, Harry's father.

At Hallowe'en, Harry notices Snape has been injured whilst trying to get past Fluffy and then during Harry first Quidditch match, Hermione notices Snape muttering a curse. She failed, however, to also notice Professor Quirrell muttering one. Harry also overhears two conversations in which he thinks Snape is talking to Quirell about the stone - in reality only one of them was.

Harry wanted to believe it was Snape and some events made that possible.

Professor Snape wasn't actually trying to steal the philosopher's stone, Harry was wrong.

Professor Quirrell was the person trying to steal the stone so that he could give it to Lord Voldemort who could use it to return to power.

When Lord Voldemort failed to murder Harry Potter, the curse rebounded and destroyed his body. Voldemort would have died had it not been for the existing Horcruxes. Instead, the remaining piece of his soul was left in a weakened state. When he was found by Professor Quirrell they planned to steal the philosopher's stone so that he could be returned to his former self.

The stone gave the person who possessed it eternal life. Tom Riddle/Lord Voldemort was afraid of death, and wanted to find any way possible to avoid it.

It was brought to Hogwarts because it was safer where all the teachers were and Dumldor. The stone was protected by many spells from different teachers.
