James Reed and George Donner took the Hastings Cutoff in 1846 as an alternative route to California, believing it would provide a quicker path to their destination. They were influenced by Lansford Hastings, who promoted the route as a shorter and more direct way for emigrants. Unfortunately, the cutoff proved to be treacherous and poorly marked, leading to significant delays and hardships for the Donner Party. Their decision ultimately had dire consequences, contributing to the tragic events that unfolded during their journey.

Three families, George Donner's, Jacob Donner's, and James Reed's, left Springfield, Illinois, on April 14, 1846. On May 19 they joined a large wagon train in Kansas. This train was led by William Russell. It broke up into smaller parties. The Donner Party didn't actually exist until July 19, 1846, when a new wagon train was organized and George Donner was elected the captain. This happened near South Pass in Wyoming.
The Donner party left from Springfield, IL. James Frazier Reed was born in Ireland and had done lead mining, farming, and cabinet making. George Donner had one crop on a farm in Texas but did not like it there so he moved to the Springfield, IL area and married Eustace Tanner.
