Does anyone know why Jane turned down the role of Lara in Dr. Zhivago? She would have been ideal for this role...a better choice than Julie Christie...and prettier.
Julie's acting in this film could have made/broke the whole shebang...and she blew it (or was it director, David Lean?)
Al Pacino described Christie as "the most poetic of actresses"...fine...in the right movie role. But Pasternak created a character with fire and passion, both of which J.C. lacked.
And not to be critical or petty: she has a large shapeless mouth. Jane would not only have supplied the passion that the movie greatly lacked...but she has a much prettier and more defined mouth (lips). I think David Lean blew it ...

This song was from the film Doctor Zhivago.
Allegedly clapping her hands in glee as North Viet Gunners shot down an attacking US jet over North Vietnam definitely would be cruel to US servicemen. However, as bad as memories are, Jane Fonda was definitely photographed (which made front page news) sitting upon a North Vietnamese Anti-Aircraft gun seat (AAA=Anti-Aircraft Artillery). Many people in America wanted Jane Fonda arrested for high treason/aiding and abetting the enemy (a capital offense) but since Vietnam, like the US Civil War, was an undeclared war; there was no treason, therefore she was not arrested.
The daughter of screen legend Henry Fonda (and the sister of actor Peter Fonda), Jane Fonda started in the movies with the forgotten 1960 comedy Tall Story. A decade later she was a movie star in her own right, having gone from the sex kitten in 1968's Barbarella to earning a reputation as a serious actress, winning Oscars for her roles in Klute (1971, directed by Alan Pakula) and Coming Home (1978). In the 1970s she was also famous as an outspoken opponent of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. She made a highly publicized trip to Hanoi, denouncing U.S. policy and earning the uncomplimentary nickname "Hanoi Jane" -- a stunt she never lived down. In the 1980s she suddenly had a new career as the star and producer of the "Jane Fonda's Workout" exercise videos and books. She married media mogul Ted Turner in 1991 and semi-retired from the movies. They separated in 2000 and Fonda filed for divorce in April of 2001. Her other films include The China Syndrome (1979, with Jack Lemmon), 9 to 5 (1980, with Dolly Parton), Stanley and Iris (1990, with Robert DeNiro) and Monster-in-Law (2005, with Jennifer Lopez).

Boris Pasternak turned down the 1958 Nobel Prize for Literature for his novel "Doctor Zhivago" due to pressure from the Soviet government. He feared that accepting the prize would put his safety and that of his family at risk.
There were many women who participated in anti-war protests and "heckling" the returning troops. One of the most notorious was the actress Jane Fonda, who visited Hanoi, posed with the wreckage of US planes shot down over North Vietnam, and berated the prisoners in the POW camps. There are even North Vietnamese propaganda photos of "Hanoi Jane" posing in the gunner's seat of an anti-aircraft cannon. A great number of veterans have never forgiven "traitor Jane" for her support of communism and disloyalty to the United States. I am one of them; I have not seen any Jane Fonda movies since her soft-porn Sci-Fi romp "Barbarella", and I will boycott everything she does.
