Why did Lord Voldemort create Horcruxes?

He didn't know he did it.

It happened when Voldemort attempted to kill Harry when he was a baby. It was quite on accident, but was a result of the spell backfiring. It was the reason that Harry could speak Parseltongue and why he and Voldemort sometimes shared a mental connection.

So he could become immortal, i.e. not die. When a horcrux is created someone puts part of his/her soul into an object so when the person them self is killed, a part of their soul lives on in the horcrux, so they can not fully be destroyed.

However, he would be able to die if someone found and destroyed all the horcruxes, he would then be mortal, but Voldemort ignorantly assumed that nobody would be able to find all his horcruxes. But Harry, along with Ron and Hermione found and destroyed all the horcruxes, thus making Voldemort mortal, so then Harry was able to kill him.

• The Diary - was created because he noted down everything about the Chamber of Secrets and how to open it in there which was releaveant to his hatred of muggles and muggle-borns

• The Locket - was created because he was related to Slytherin, could speak Parseltounge like Slytherin and was of course, in Slytherin house at Hogwarts which is the only place that ever felt like home to Voldemort.

• The Cup - was connected with Hogwarts, the only place that ever felt like home.

• The Diadem - was connected with Hogwarts, the only place that ever felt like home.
• Harry Potter - was a mistake and not supposed to be a Horcrux.

• Nagini - Voldemort really liked snakes.
