The prophesy said that "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches."This was followed by a brief explanation of that "one." Voldemort attacked Harry because Harry fit the description in the prophesy (along with Neville Longbottom, but Voldemort chose Harry), and he obviously did not want to "vanquish." So, he came to the Potters' house and made his unsuccessful attempt on baby Harry's life.
