Why did Lucius Malfoy put Tom Riddle's diary in Ginny Weasley's book?

Lucius Malfoy picked up one of Ginny Weasley's books and slipped the diary inside. He then handed both the book and the diary back to her. Lucius Malfoy was not aware that it was a Horcrux, he had been told to keep it safe by Voldemort and simply wanted rid of it before the Ministry found it.

∙ 9y agoLord Voldemort gave Lucius Malfoy the diary and told him to keep it safe, never telling him what it actually was. Lucius was stuck with it after Voldemort disappeared. When the Ministry started raiding his house, he sold many of the questionable items in his house, but he couldn't sell the diary - so he got rid of it by trying to frame the Weasley's daughter.
