And in an act of revenge, Congressman Preston Brooks assaulted Summers in the Senate when few people were there. Summer was almost beaten to death and Brooks was never charged.

In the nNorthern States, there was a furious backlash and Brooks was seen as a monster and fuelled the idea that the Southern Statyes were violent and uncivilised. In the South, however, Brooks was seen as a hero and was even gifted canes from the Southern population as a reward for his attack.
