Why did Regulus Black die in 'Harry Potter'?

Regulus basically killed himself, or rather, committed suicide. He went with his house elf, Kreacher to the cave where one of Lord Voldemort's Horcruxes was kept and did what was necessary to acquire it. After ordering Kreacher to go back home without him, he pretty much allowed himself to be dragged down into the lake with the Inferi to his death.

Long answer: He and his house elf Kreacher took voldemort's horcrux the Locket from the cursed basin. He then told Kreacher to take the Locket (and try to destroy it) and apparate out, as he was a house elf and they could apparate to places normal witches and wizards cannot. The moment Reg touched the water, the inferi pulled him down.

He died because he discovered Lord Voldemort was making Horcruxes and decided to destroy them. If the inferi hadn't killed him, Voldemort would have.

We don't know for sure, but it is suggested that he was either killed by the Inferi in a cavern lake (wearing the false horcrux necklace), or that the death eaters killed him.
