Why did Ron leave harry and Hermione?

You see him in the first book bringing Harry to his new muggle home, and you see him in the last book carrying what looks like Harry's dead body back from the Forbidden Forest where he had a confrontation with Lord Voldemort. He get's sent to Azkaban for a while in the 2nd book but never leaves the story.
