Simeon Stylites lived from 390 to 2 September 459, and was a Christian ascetic saint that lived for 37 years on a small platform on top of a pillar in Syria. While on the platform, he tied himself with ropes so he wouldn't fall. Overtime, his skin grew over the ropes and maggots gathered. The maggots were considered "holy." He was a devoted monk.
Stylites or Pillar-Saints are a type of Christian ascetic who in the early days of the Byzantine Empire stood on pillars preaching, fasting and praying. They believed that the mortification of their bodies would help ensure the salvation of their souls.
I assume that the description of a good Christian is anybody who gives themselves wholly over to the Will of God for them, then St. Simeon was a very good Christian. St. Simeon Stylite became the first, and arguably the most famous of the pillar hermits. He started his pursuit of God as a hermit, but his spirituality was so famous and sought after, that he eventually too refuge in on a nine foot pillar to escape the crowds of pilgrims asking his advice. Over the years, the pillar was replaced, and the last one was over fifty feet high. For a more thorough description see the Catholic Encyclopedia article about St. Simeon below:
St. Simeon Stylites
A recluse living on top of a high pillar would be called a "stylite.", or, more generally, an "ascetic" (which refers to living under extreme conditions). The most famous ascetic living on a pillar, by the way, was St. Symeon Stylites, who lived on a pillar rising to 15 meters for 20 years (circa 400 AD).
