Kaczynski was trying to make a point and in a big way. He also was avoiding capture which would have been very hard had he used another type of weapon. It was almost the perfect crime. His crimes were not of the same ilk as other serial killers. And Kaczynski obviously suffers from mental illness. I think in his mind he was doing society a favor, sacrafice a few for the most. He never changed anything, just killed some innocent people.
