William B. Purvis invented the fountain pen to address the limitations of traditional ink pens, which required constant dipping into ink wells and were prone to smudging and drying out. His design incorporated a self-contained ink reservoir, allowing for a more convenient and efficient writing experience. Purvis aimed to improve the functionality and accessibility of writing instruments, making them more user-friendly for everyday use.
There is no historic record of W. B. Purvis except that he was an African-American inventor who filed numerous patents with the US Patent Office between 1884 and 1897, including an improved form of the fountain pen.
Lewis Edson Waterman made his first fountain pen in New York City in 1883. He was inspired to create a pen that would prevent ink leaks and provide a more reliable writing experience. His invention led to the establishment of the Waterman pen company, which became renowned for its quality and innovation in writing instruments.

W. B. Purvis realized how much of an inconvenience it was to have to carry around a bottle of ink whenever you needed to sign a contract or fill out legal papers. He therefore decided to do something about it. On January 7, 1890, Purvis received a patent for the fountain pen. The pen eliminated the need for an ink bottle by storing ink within a reservoir within the pen which is then fed to the pen's tip. Of his accomplishment, Purvis said, "the object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive construction of a fountain pen adapted to general use and which may be carried in the pocket." The creation of the fountain pen has made office work cleaner and less expensive for businesses all over the world.
