Normandy had actually helped Edward in the past so he felt it was right to pay the Normans back by giving the throne to William. He had no children to lend it to but Harald Hadrada and Harold Godwineson wanted the throne as well as many other people
Harald Hardraada was a distant cousin of Edward the Confessor through their shared descent from King Cnut of England. Cnut was the father of Edward's half-brother, Harold II, and Harald Hardraada was a descendant of Cnut's first wife, Emma of Normandy. This familial connection positioned Harald as a contender for the English throne, particularly after Edward's death in 1066, leading to his invasion of England that year.
Harald Hardrada claimed the Norwegian throne based on his descent from King Harald Fairhair and his military successes. He also argued that he had been promised the throne by Magnus the Good, the previous king of Norway. Additionally, Hardrada believed that he had a stronger claim to the English throne than Harold Godwinson due to an alleged agreement with King Edward the Confessor.
Prince Edward became famous and historically renown primarily due to his abdication from the throne. His mistress, Wallis Simpson, was the reason for this abdication. 'Unsuitable to be his wife', Edward chose her over his kingdom. Edward is one of the shortest reigning monarchs, with 326 days in total in which he was on the throne. Edward was famous without doing anything due to his royal birth, however it is his abdication that forever preserves Edward as a famous royal.
If Charles dies before Queen Elizabeth dies, then Prince William will be first in line. If Charles dies while he is king (having succeeded Elizabeth to the throne), then Wlliam becomes king and his eldest son (supposing there is one) will be heir to the throne. If William does not have children, then his younger brother Harry will be first in line.
Edward the Seventh, who reigned from 1901 to 1910, as he was her eldest son and so first in line to the throne only because men went first, thankfully it has changed.
No Edgar wasn't promised the throne although he was Edward's relative. Only William and Harold was
William's claim was that he was the first cousin of the late King (Edward the confessor
We only had his word for it that Edward the Confessor had promised him the throne.
William, Duke of Normandy, claimed that Edward the Confessor had promished him the throne, but there's NO evidence that he did so. MY ANSWER!!!!! William of Normandy believed he was entitled to the throne of England because he claimed the Edward swore the holy grails for when he died he was to become King. Although William says this there is no evidence that he did so.
He was the Saxon king of England and died without an heir to the throne so many people ( Harold Godwineson, Harald Hardrada and Duke William of Normandy ) Claimed to be the hier to the throne.
Because Harold Godwin Promised William the Throne and William Agreed with Edward the Confessor to become king
William claimed that he was promised the throne by Edward the COnfessor, King of England who did in January 1066.
William said that Edward the confessor promised him the throne but I'm not sure if everyone else knew if he had
Because he had no sons
William of Normandy, who felt he had a legitimate right to the throne of England, invaded England when he was not given the throne upon the death of Edward the Confessor, King of England. When he invaded, he was met by King Harold, who had been given the throne.
Answer There is some confusion of names in this question. At the start of the year 1066 the King of England was Edward I, known as Edward The Confessor because he was a deeply pious Christian. He was later made a Saint. Harold Godwinson was Edward's brother-in-law (Edward was married to Harold's sister) and was extremely powerful as The Earl of Wessex. When Edward died on 5th January 1066, Harold Godwinson was proclaimed King by the Witan - an early forerunner of the English Parliament. Duke William of Normandy was a distant cousin of King Edward and he claimed that Edward had named him to be his successor - a claim also made by Harold Godwinson. Both claims may be true - it is possible that Edward had made the same promise to both men. In October 1066, Duke William invaded England and at the Battle of Hastings defeated King Harold and became King William I of England. Because he won the throne by means of invasion and battle, he is also known as William the Conqueror.
He had no heir to the throne and he died before he could deside who was to be the next king
