Although at the time it was reported that Marilyn Monroe committed suicide (probable, by an overdose of barbiturates) it is widely believed that she was murdered to protect the Kennedy's. At the time, she had been seeing both Bobby and John Kennedy (both married of course) and she became distraught when they decided to distance themselves from her. She threatened to go public with their affairs and everything she had written in her diary (which was never found after her death) about them, including secrets that would be extremely embarrasing to the Kennedy family if they were made public.

The best source recently for the murder theory is her former niece, June DiMaggio (Joe DiMaggio's niece) who recently has recounted how her mother was on the phone with Marilyn and heard the name of the person she believed entered the room and killed her before the line went dead. Fearing her family would be harmed, she took the name to her grave, but the fact that she was on the phone with her when she was interrupted places a big doubt on the "probable suicide" conclusion of the coroner.
