Why did the Basilisk kill Moaning Myrtle when she looked at it but it didn't kill Harry Potter in the Chamber?

Harry doesn't look at the basilisk until Fawkes has blinded it. Therefore, it's eyes can no longer make eye contact with people and kill them.
