They were afraid of magic and Petunia had always been jelaous of her sister so they hated magic and did not want to raise someone who studied it.

Harry potter is a deeply disturebed and emotional person due to missing out on his childhood with the Dursleys and not knowing the truth. Whilst the wizarding world looks up at Harry Potter he would be quite happy to lead a normal life. However if he had led a normal life he may have not met the valuable friends and family he meets in the books. He is also quite brave standing up to Voldermort but that might be because his parent's death spurns him on to defeat their killer which is why he always knew he would have one day have to face Voldermort. He also has temper problems.
