The "spider-walk scene" was intended to be in the 1973 version of the Excorcist and Linda R. Hager was hired to perform it.
However, the director of the film (William Friedkin) deleted the scene before it was released as he felt it was ineffective technically.
When developments with digital media technology became more advanced Friedkin was able to work with CGI artists to improve the scene for the 2000 version of the movie (The Exorcist: The Version You've never Seen Before)
In 1998 Warner Bros re-realeased the DVD The Exorcist 25th Anniversary Special Edition which featured a special BBC documentary (The Fear of God: The Making of the Exorcist) which showed the never before seen footage of the original spider walk.
