because he was #defenseless. if they were caught by another tribute they would most likely die. and #2.. peeta was practically dying and if he fell asleep he would die. he had to stay concious

∙ 11y agoBecause Katniss feels that she owes Peeta for saving her life all those years ago when he stuck his neck out for her and threw her the bread, which she has yet to thank him for. She doesn't want to have the setback of debts when she goes into the arena. She wants to do her best to survive for her sister, but she knows there can only be one Victor.
