Breasts are an evolutionary adaptation in mammals, including people, as a way for a mother to provide nourishment (in the form of milk) for her newborn. In early humans, larger breasts were a sign of health and fertility; women with obvious breasts were therefore more likely to attract mates and have many children, with the result that well-developed breasts became a trait that spread throughout the population: a perfect example of Darwin's idea of natural selection (also known as the theory of evolution).
