2 reasons. 1:it was a kind of training for their future fights. 2:it was a plan to make the enemy think that sailor moon was going solo or to the dark kingdom so the enemy would bring them to their base.

If its the episode when Seiya and the other starlights dress up as a monster to frighten Usagi Chan and the sailor scouts, then the real thing turns up then its the one I mentioned
