King Aegeus throws himself into the sea after mistakenly believing that his son, Theseus, has been killed by the Minotaur. He had instructed Theseus to return from Crete with white sails if he was victorious, but when he sees the black sails of the returning ship, he assumes the worst. Overcome with grief and despair, Aegeus leaps from a cliff into the waters, which later become known as the Aegean Sea. Aegeus, after whom the Aegean Sea is called, became king of Athens and father of Theseus.
Aegeus
The Greeks believed the Aegean Sea was named after King Aegeus of Athens. According to mythology, Aegeus, anxious about the fate of his son Theseus, who was fighting the Minotaur in Crete, mistakenly thought Theseus had died when he saw the ship's black sails returning. Heartbroken, Aegeus threw himself into the sea, which then took his name, becoming the Aegean Sea.
I'm not really sure but I think that when Theseus returned to Athens sailing with a black flag, he thought his son died so he threw himself into the sea. When King Aegeus's son, Theseus, returned from Crete sailing with a black sail instead of white, Aegeus threw himself of a cliff into the sea, which is now called the Aegean seaWhen theseus came back from crete sailing with the black flag Aegeus threw him self off a cliff
Theseus's father, King Aegeus of Athens, was believed to have died by suicide after mistakenly thinking that Theseus had been killed. Aegeus had instructed Theseus to raise a white sail upon his return if he was victorious against the Minotaur, but when he saw a black sail instead, he assumed the worst and threw himself into the sea. This act gave the sea its name, the Aegean Sea, in his memory.
Aegeus killed himself because he thought he lost his son, Theseus. Theseus traveled to Crete to defeat the Minotaur and told his father that if he returned victorious he would have a white sail. However Ariadne cursed Theseus and the gods caused Theseus to forget to raise his white sail. Aegeus saw a ship with a black sail and thinking that his son was dead he threw himself off a cliff.
Theseus refuses to travel by water on his journey to Athens because his father, King Aegeus, had instructed him to raise white sails if he was successful in slaying the Minotaur. Theseus forgets to do so, and as a result, Aegeus mistakenly believes Theseus has perished and throws himself into the sea, which eventually becomes known as the Aegean Sea.
King Aegeus was one of the two fathers of Theseus. The other father of Theseus was the sea god Poseidon.
