I think it was because of how misunderstood he was. He is often misinterpreted as being evil, while he is simply bitter due to past tragedies of his. This includes having to spent half of every year away from his wife, being the outsider of his family and

∙ 10y agoBecause he had accomplished many things that not even Hercules had done (including the impossible). Also, his personalities can easily identify him as a true son of the Sea God. The most important thing that made Poseidon all the more prouder, is that Percy had remained humble and modest through everything he had done for the sake of Olympus.
As is stated in the book:
" No hero is above fear, Percy. And you have risen above every hero. Not even Hercules."
" Whatever else you do, know that you are mine. You are a true son of the Sea God."
" Percy, lesser beings do many horrible things in the name of the gods. That does not mean we gods approve. The way our sons and daughters act in our names…well, it usually says more about them than it does about us. And you, Percy, are my favorite son."
