The fictional character of Sherlock Holmes was heroic, in the sense of solving crimes and helping to bring criminals to justice, which is a nice thing to do; this helps people and helps society in general. Whether Holmes would have been described as having a nice personality is another matter. Most people would probably judge him to be overly pedantic and egotistical to be considered nice. Humility is nicer.
Spoiler!!In Sherlock Holmes 2 Moriarty and Sherlock engage in a mental battle when they are in Switzerland on a castle on a cliff. In the mental battle the fact is revealed that since Moriarty had previously damaged his shoulder Sherlock would loose and Moriarty would push him off the ledge. He never actually died though.
Most likely, considering he's never been married and in those days usually that meant no sex, and even if sex did take place outside of marriage Sherlock Holmes never gave the impression he was the sort of guy that went around sleeping with women.
