The killer kidnapped him and kept him drugged, when Reid was rescued he was unable to kick the habit. They don't get into it much later and it takes at least a full season for it to come full circle, as the storyline arcs over many episodes and is not discussed in detail as he became very adept at keeping it a secret and quit for awhile.
