Why does papa smurf have only one daughter smurfette?

The creator, Pierre Culliford, wanted to highlight issues such as racism and promote tolerance in his comic series when it was created in 1958. The lone female smurf was used to promote discussion about women's role in society and sexism. When the comic moved to television, these issues were lost in the series.

Smurfette was created by Gargamel for evil doings against the other Smurfs. Turned out, she sided with the other Smurfs against Gargamel.

The answer above is salient but there were two female Smurfs other than Smurfette: Sassette (who was created by Gargomel for the reason described above) and Nanny Smurf, but these were secondary characters.

Smurfete was originally created by Gargamel to destroy the other Smurfs. His plan was to lure them because of Smurfete's beauty, but, Papa Smurf saved her and cast a spell on her to turn her into the Smurf she was meant to be. :D

In the story it explains that smurfette was made by Gargamel in his plan to destroy the smurfs, she was evil, but Papa Smurf took her in and made her nice :)
