Why is the dome of a Van de Graaff machine spherical with no sharp edges?

A Van de Graaff generator is an electrostatic generator which builds up an enormous positive charge on the outer surface of its principal dome. The negative of the circuit is provided by a smaller secondary dome or sphere. Since, it involves electrostatic charge the domes are kept spherical and smooth, as any unevenness or sharp edges would cause a drastic difference in the charge per unit area between the point of unevenness and the rest of the surface. At such high potentials this difference in charge per unit area can be harmful to the material of sphere, the circuit and the surroundings (as it may cause an enormous charge leakage leading to ionization of the surrounding air).

What kind of structure is a geodesic dome?

A geodesic dome is a spherical or partial - spherical shell structure or lattice shell based on a network of great circles on the surface of a sphere.

Why doesnt the student receive a shock when she stands on a piece of insulating material places her hand on top of a Van de Graaff generator and then turns the generator on?

She is not shocked. She becomes part of the dome of the Van de Graaff, and charges flow onto her body. They do not jump to her body through a spark, so she is not shocked.

How does the Van De Graaff generator works?

A large rubber band spins, rubbing on a metallic dome. some electrons are transfered from the band to the dome, acting as static electricity. When, say Steve, touches the dome the charged particles will leap to him. Steve will experience a static shock.

Formula for surface area of a spherical dome?

The surface area of a sphere is 4(3.14)R2where R is the radius of the sphere so the surface area of your dome is half of that. 2(314)R2

Does a dome have a hemispherical form?

No a dome has a spherical form. It looks like half a circle

What is the generator that uses friction to produce a large static charge on a metal dome?

THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION IS A VANDAGRAPH GENERATOR

What is a monolithic dome?

A monolithic dome is a curving, half-spherical structure supported indepedently of surrounding architecture. The former gives it a dome-like quality, and its free-standing nature designates it as 'monolithic'.

What is the difference between a hemisphere and a dome?

A hemisphere is half of a spherical or almost spherical shape for example a planet or the brain. A dome however is an architectural element having a circular plan and looks like a hollow upper half of a sphere, and constructed so as to exert an equal thrust in all directions.

How do you figure the surface area of a dome?

A perfect dome (1/2 of a sphere) has a surface area of 2piR2. This is because a sphere's surface area is 4piR2, and dividing that by 2 would simplify to 2piR2.

When did the teapot dome scandal surface?

it happened in 1921

How are lava plateaus and dome mountains the same?

magma extrusions, lava plateau on surface, dome underground then eroded.
