∙ 11y agoGandalf chose Bilbo to be the fourteenth member of the company. Gandalf selected Bilbo because:
- Gandalf had always been interested in hobbits, so when looking for the fourteenth member of the company, his thoughts returned to hobbits.
- Hobbits can remain unseen if they wish and are very quiet (except at parties...)
- Gandalf remembered that Bilbo as a child had always been inquisitive and eager for news of the outside world.
