Why is the queens husband not a king since he is married to the queen?

The queen's husband is usually known as her consort. His title varies, depending on what title he brought to the marriage or what title was subsequently bestowed upon him. The current consort was born a prince and has since been titled as the Duke of Edinburgh.

∙ 13y agoTechnically he is King consort meaning he is married to a Monarch that holds all power within the constitution, so as if a woman married a King she would be Queen consort. Unless the Monarch were too by royal proclamation declares that she and her husband hold equal power, which would be unnecessary as under the Constitution the monarch has very little if any political power.

Since he is her husband by marriage and not a direct descendant to the throne, he can't be 'King'. When they first got married, his title was 'His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh'. In 1957 the Queen granted her husband the title of Prince, his title is now 'His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh'. Next in line to the throne is the Queen and Prince Philip's oldest son, Prince Charles. When the Queen dies, he will be 'King Charles'.
