Due to coastal erosion on the coastline, the size and numbers of beaches in the region are becoming more limited, and with its seemingly limited seasonal activity; retaining their sandy beaches to sustain visitor numbers is high on their priorities.

The process of long-shore drift; currents in the ocean and winds cause waves to act at an angle to the shoreline, therefore as time goes by, particles of sediment (sand) travel along the shoreline.

Groynes contain sections of sand from completely being washed away, preventing losing your beach.
