When young seaman Richard Henry Dana sailed from Boston around Cape Horn
aboard tall ship Pilgrim in 1835, he visited the undeveloped ports of California --
from San Diego to San Francisco. The ship's cargo of finished goods was
traded for the hides of range cattle that were taken back to New England factories.
The ports in between were San Pedro, Santa Barbara, Monterey -- and San Juan.
The latter was the anchorage for Mission San Juan Capistrano.
In Dana's book of his voyage, "Two Years Before the Mast," he praised the scenery --
cove, headlands, cliffs, rocks and beach -- at San Juan as "the only romantic spot in California."
His book was published in 1840. When the U.S. Coast Survey was conducted
in 1884, that spot was named Dana Point in tribute to his romantic words.
