Harry and Voldemort's wands shared a core and when used against each other they connected, with Harry's wand forcing Voldemort's to produce "ghosts" from the last spells cast by the wand.
The last spell cast using Voldemort's wand was to create a silver hand for Wormtail. Prior to that, it was used to murder Cedric Diggory, Frank Bryce, Bertha Jorkins and finally Harry's parents. This connection is called Prior Incantato. Had the connection carried on for a longer period of time, it would have produced more spells.
