It's not why was she insane, it's if. Her husband Stephen Girard admitted her into the hospital on grounds that she was insane. She suffered from headaches and had a few outbursts, in this day that would not be claimed insane, however it could have been at that time. It is believed that her husband sent her there because she cheated on him, he later became aware that she was pregnant with a child that was not his own. She remained in the hospital 25 years till she died at age 56.
