Philip Nolan was known as The Man Without a Country because at the great treason trial held at Richmond (where he was found guilty) when he was asked to speak in his defence, say that he had always been faithful, loyal to the United States he cried out in a frenzy "Damn the United States I wish I never hear of the United States again."
He never did from that day - Sept 28th 1807- until the day he died -May 11th 1863 he never heard her name again. For more than half a century he was The Man Without a Country.
