It is about Simon Bolivar -- "El Libertador". His struggle for independence from the Spanish Empire. Bolivar is to South American what George Washington is to the US.
The Axeman is based on a real character...he existed... he sent a letter, manifesto to the local paper, saying that the people of New Orleans would NOT be killed on a specific night, if they played jazz in their homes! He managed to have all of New Orleans play jazz out of fear! And the music flowed... from people homes, local clubs, bars etc. Crazy!
I was utterly delighted! Mitch Glazer, creator, show-runner of Magic City, and dear friend, shared in my delight! And we were thrilled!
My primary guiding light is to work with people that I respect and to participate in the telling of that story. I'm not in any way driven by a particular genre. A good story is all I'm after.
I suppose the short answer is...them. Working with them. I'm reminded of when I was a kid and I spent time on my father's film sets (my father being John Huston) and I always noticed how everything seemed so effortless...however complicated...however difficult...the people were of such a caliber that it seemed easy...and that's what it was like working with them.
In a way when you look at a Keane's painting... there is a hypnotic nature about them, the way they look out at you makes them hard to ignore. A lot of Burton's films are about people who don't necessarily fit into the mold of normality - non conformists, outsiders. And that's very much the story of "Big Eyes."
Margaret Keane, known for her paintings of children, usually alone, almost orphaned and with large dewy eyes... regarded not as true art by some, but yet so soulful, sentimental. They have those wonderful little highlight in the eyes, eyes that cry out to you from the canvas. A lot of us know her work, maybe only subconsciously. The paintings are very recognizable, popular. The story is about Margaret's (Amy Adams) emancipation. And her relationship with her husband played by Christoph Waltz.
A one and only experience. I'm always reminded when I meet people with that immensity of talent, how unassuming they seem... Tim Burton is a gentle soul and a gentle man.
He's a dirty bastard (laughs). He's very interested in his own gratification and really he's seducing Masters to try to achieve his own personal fantasies. From my point of view, he was a very fun character to play.
I played opposite Edgar Ramirez in Clash of the Titans. He was Aries and I was Poseidon, so I thought it would be fun to act with my (Greek, demigod) nephew again! (laughs). The script, was more than intriguing, as was the director (Alberto Arvelo) who I spoke to on the phone several times prior to traveling to Venezuela. The adventurous spirit in me was awakened and I embarked on the journey.
