If diamonds lasted forever, we wouldn't be able to shape them into faceted stones in jewelry, or pound them into dust for use by industry. Though they are the hardest natural substance known to man, they can be heated to melting and fractured by force.

Diamonds are also unstable over a very long period of time. They are a specific crystal structure of carbon that can form in high heat and pressure conditions. All diamonds on the surface of the Earth will gradually revert to the more stable structure known as graphite (used for pencils, etc). However this process will take millions of years and should not concern diamond owners.
