The wave you are referring to could be a Mexican wave. A wave is produced when particles of the medium(eg.air) move back and forth. This movement moves other objects back and forth. Therefore there is a succession of vibrations, which is called a wave. A group in the wave will be 'compressed' or will have their arms raised, while the group infront of it would be a 'rarefaction' or have their arms put down.
Thus this activiting becomes a wave.
