In solids - the molecules are very closely packed. That's why there is no space for them to move around and this contributes towards the factor of stiffness.

In liquids - the molecules are comparatively lesser compressed than solids that's why they move around in freely motion and do not have a fixed shape and size.

In Gases - the molecules are set much apart and that's why they are ready and set to move in any direction. That's why the gas is most compressible and it hasn't got any shape.

Some Characteristics of Gases, Liquids and Solids and the Microscopic Explanation for the Behavior

gas

liquid

solid

assumes the shape and volume of its container

particles can move past one another

assumes the shape of the part of the container which it occupies

particles can move/slide past one another

retains a fixed volume and shape

rigid - particles locked into place

compressible

lots of free space between particles

not easily compressible

little free space between particles

not easily compressible

little free space between particles

flows easily

particles can move past one another

flows easily

particles can move/slide past one another

does not flow easily

rigid - particles cannot move/slide past one another

How are atoms or molecules arranged in a true solid?

The arrangements of atoms and molecules give matter properties. Each arrangement is called a ''state of matter". A solid is matter that has a definite shap and takes up a definite amount of space. Vintage Magnet Student 4th Grade Mrs.Bhattacharyra Room 28

Why does the state of matter depend on the motion of its particles?

State of matter depend on arrangement of particle. In gases the arrangement is random and very loose. So they move freely. In solid, the arrangement is tight. So they cannot move freely.

Matter is a solid liquid or gas because of the arrangement and motion of its atoms or molecules. is that true or false?

this is true, and one way these molecules are affected is by changes in temperature. these molecules are also affected by pressure. you can literally press water back into ice; the same way you can lower the temperature until it freezes. oh and the space in between these molecules plays a big role as well.
