"DNA fingerprinting." is the expression known to mean: noun: A method used to identify multilocus DNA banding patterns that are specific to an individual, by exposing a sample of the person's DNA to molecular probes and various analytical techniques. DNA fingerprinting is often used to provide evidence in criminal law cases. Also called genetic fingerprinting. Sources: The American Heritage Medical Dictionary & Mosby's Medical and Dental dictionaries. DNA can be collected from almost all bodily fluids and certain cells. Rather than map the whole 3 billion letters, the process cuts out, by enzyme action, specific sequences of DNA; Arranged by length, the strands are 'tagged' radioactively to emit x-rays. During Photography the emitted x-rays produce the unique 'bar code' of DNA sequences. A genetic 'fingerprint'. The collection, preservation, and processing of DNA evidence is a separate and distinct procedure and discipline than that from collecting, preserving, and identifying latent fingerprints. The two are not compatible, or comparable in any way.

Lifting the prints off of something, the next thing would be placing the 'cloth or item with the lifted fingerprint' under a scanner of some form, which then scans the print into a computer database where it is checked for a match.
