Refractive Index

(i) Refractive index of a medium is that characteristic which decides speed of light in it.

(ii) It is a scalar, unit less and dimensionless quantity.

(iii) Absolute refractive index :

When light travels from vacuum to any transparent medium then refractive index of medium w.r.t. vacuum is called it's absolute refractive index i.e. vacuumµmedium = c/v

Absolute refractive indices for glass, water and diamond are respectively µg = 3/2 = 1.5, µw = 4/3 = 1.33 and µD = 12/5 = 2.4

(iv) Relative refractive index :

When light travels from medium (1) to medium (2) then refractive index of medium (2) w.r.t. medium (1) is called it's relative refractive index i.e. 1µ2 = µ2/µ1 = v1/v2 (where v1 and v2 are the speed of light in medium 1 and 2 respectively).

(v) When we say refractive index we mean absolute refractive index.

(vi) The minimum value of absolute refractive index is 1. For air it is very near to 1. ( 1.003)

yes

What is the prediction of the relative bond energies needed to break?

The bonding energy depends on differences between electronegativities.

When a ray passes through two parallel slabs what will be the angle of deviation?

It depends on (a) the angle of incidence, and (b) the relative refractive indices of the slabs as well as the medium on either side of them and between them.

How can a stars spectrum be different from another stars spectrum?

The differences in spectrum are mainly due to: * Differences in temperature between the stars * Differences in chemical composition * Differences in relative movement (redshift / blueshift, due to the Doppler effect)

What is the difference between a quartz and diamond?

There are many differences between quartz and diamond. Primarily, quartz is much softer than diamond. Damond's hardness measurement of 10 -- on the Mohs scale -- is the highest hardness level. Quartz Locations: Brazil, Madagascar, Mozambique; Colors Found: Various; Family: Quartz Hardness: 7.00; Refractive Index: 1.50; Relative Density: 2.60 - 2.70 Diamond Locations: all continents except Europe and Antarctica; Colors Found: Various; Family: Carbon Hardness: 10.00; Refractive Index: 2.41; Relative Density: 3.50 Quartz and diamond have different chemical compositions: diamond is pure carbon, quartz is silicon dioxide.

What happens when a wave from one medium into another medium at an angle?

as usual.... it gets reflected, absorbed or refracted through a particular angle... the angle being dependent on the relative refractive index between the two mediums.

What is the differences between relative humidity and humidity?

Humidity is the amount of water vapor present in the air. The relative humidity is the measure of the amount of water vapor present in the air compared to the amount needed for saturation.
