Wich is the table based on the mass of the element rather the number of protons.
Later studies created the new table wich was superior to the old one, describing isotpes better. The old table is also called the Periodic Table of elements just like the new one.Sometimes it is reffered to it with 'mendelev's table of elements'.
Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleyev. Another spelling of his name is Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev.
He invented the periodic table. You must know what that means; he was the father of basic chemistry. Actually, he didn't discover the periodic table. He just arranged the only elements he had available in his day (not a lot) and arranged them based on patterns of # of protons, electrons, reactivity, etc. He didn't have an in-depth knowledge yet of electron configuration ;however, his "guess" turned out to have so many great implications that we now use his invention everyday everywhere.
This is from wikipedia: Although precursors to this table exist, its invention is generally credited to Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869, who intended the table to illustrate recurring ("periodic") trends in the properties of the elements.
He is important because he was the person who invented the Periodic Table and made it how it is today

Dmitri Mendeleev is the scientist who is credited with first arranging and classifying elements into a chart that laid the foundation for the modern periodic table. Mendeleev's periodic table arranged elements by their atomic weight and predicted the properties of unknown elements that were yet to be discovered.
