Yes. Conduction involves the transfer of thermal energy without any movement of the material medium. For example, when one end of a metal rod is heated, the atoms at that end of the red vibrate more vigorously (gain kinetic energy), and they will collide with the neighbouring less energetic atoms and transfer its kinetic energy them and so on. Without these particles, thermal energy cannot be tranferred through conduction. The only form of thermal energy transfer which does not require a material medium (i.e., the atoms and molecules) is infrared radiation.

Yes, transfer of thermal energy via conduction requires a medium. Conduction of heat energy is the transfer of kinetic energy from one particle to other in a substance. In metals, conduction of thermal energy takes place mainly when electrons with high speed bombard other particles. Therefore the transfer of heat energy in metals via conduction is faster than in non metals. This is also why conduction takes place most effiently in solids, followed by when it is in the liquid state, and lastly when it is in the gaseous state. particles in the solid state are closely packed, while those in the liquid state are slightly further apart from each other, sliding across each other. those in the gaseous state are very far apart. Transfer of thermal energy via convection also requires a medium. The only process of transfer of thermal energy which does not require a medium is by radiation. Radiation can travel through vacuum, just like any other electromagnetic wave. Transfer of heat energy via radiation takes place when magnetic and electric fields which are in phase move right angles to each other. This does not have a disturbance of particles where it is travelling pass.

No they don't. Which is lucky ... can you think of a medium that's

made up of anything smaller than electrons ?

Waves require a medium in order for energy to be transferred. waves can either travel through a medium or through empty space?

E.M. waves require no medium. Sound waves require a medium.

Name one kind of wave that does not require a medium?

An electromagnetic wave (this includes light) does not require a physical medium - it can travel through empty space. An electromagnetic wave (this includes light) does not require a physical medium - it can travel through empty space. An electromagnetic wave (this includes light) does not require a physical medium - it can travel through empty space. An electromagnetic wave (this includes light) does not require a physical medium - it can travel through empty space.

The transfer of heat by means of rays?

Radiation is the means of heat conduction through electromagnetic (EM) waves. These waves are known as Thermal radiation and differ from other EM waves as Radio waves, Microwaves etc. The other two methods of heat transfer are Conduction and Convection where both require a medium (such as air, water etc.) for the transfer to take place.

What types of waves require a medium?

Mechanical waves. For example, sound waves, ocean waves, etc. Many waves need a medium to travel: sound waves, water waves, and seismic waves.Electromagnetic waves do not need a medium.

Which process transfers thermal energy by contact?

This proess is called conduction. The other processes are convection and radiation. Convection is the transfer of energy through movement, such as boiling water. Radiation is the transfer of thermal energy through a medium or space, such as the sun heating the earth.

Write the condition required for conduction of heat?

It require the medium with conduction property. The medium must be stable enough to withstand heat and not thermally decompose. It is then apply temperature difference to start such conduction heat transfer.

Which method of heat transfer use a medium?

Both conduction and convection require an intervening medium, but convection requires the medium to be able to move.

In which form of heat transfer is a medium not required?

Heat transfer by means of radiation doesn't heat the medium. In fact, radiation doesn't even require a medium in order to work. Strictly speaking, convection doesn't heat the medium either. Convection transfers heat by moving the medium around. Of course, heat also spreads throughout the medium by conduction while the convection is going on.

Does conduction require direct contact?

convection requires a medium to travel. In space there is no air but, a vacuum. Therefore direct heat from the sun is radiation as it does not require a medium to travel.

Why is radiation different to conduction and convection?

because, RADIATION occurs only in vaccum.. It does not require a medium to travel... where as conduction and convection require medium to travel. CONDUCTION: heat transfer between homogenous molecules(i.e.) flow of heat inside a body from one point to another. CONVECTION: heat transfer between two mediums(i.e) flow of heat from a metal to air surrounding the metal.

What makes convection and conduction possible?

Lack of a flow medium will inhibit conduction and convection.

Does conduction require a medum?

Yes, since there would be no conduction of sound in a vacuum.

What is eletronic conduction?

conduction id a process by which heat is transmitted through a medium from one particle to another.

Wave that does not require a medium?

All waves require a medium.

Why can't the suns heat reach us by conduction or convection?

because there is no medium, conduction and convection need medium to spread through, they cannot spread through vacuum.

Why does there have to be a medium for waves to travel through?

There does not have to be a medium. Light does not require a medium. Mechanical waves require a mediumAnswer 2:Not all waves require a medium for their transmission. Mechanical waves require a medium for their transmission because it is the molecules of the medium which cause the wave to propagate. However, electromagnetic waves do NOT require a medium. (for example light)
