Yes, The room does not work too well as insulation, But It does help in the fact that you do not have to heat it in winter. Also helps in summer because you are not cooling it. ,,,,,,,,,, What I mean by 'Its not good insulation' Is This: A room being blocked off does not store temperature as well as an insulated wall, But its better than nothing.

How do fireplaces conserve energy?

Fireplaces don't necessarily conserve energy. In fact, many fireplaces can actually be wasteful energy appliances if not installed, used, and maintained correctly. For gas fireplace owners, I would certainly suggest adding a fireplace blower or fan kit. A blower kit will pull cool air from the lower louver and force air up and around your firebox. The air is heated as it travels around your firebox or insert and is eventually expelled out of the top louver. Without a blower kit installed, your gas fireplace is nothing more than something pretty to look at. Sure, you get some residual radiant heat, but it's nothing close to what's need to heat an entire room. Adding a simple blower kit to a gas fireplace can save you hundreds of dollars a year in home heating costs.

Does it save energy and money in a house to close off heating vents in some room in the winter Or does this interfere with the proper functioning of the heating system?

it just might. but if you really want to save money on heating cost in the winter leave thermostat on 1 setting and DO NOT TOUCH. if you get cold put warmer cloths on. Also changing out an old system with a new more efficiant 1 will work better ( money permitted ). its really not which one is the better system by brand but what seer's they are the higher seer the more money saved with energy cost. For example a 16 or 18 seer Heat Pump will save you quite a bit of money in the long run. your energy bill will drop and that's were you will see the savings. Also make sure your windows and doors are air tight.

Are particles that are close together in gas liquid or solid?

Particle spacing is the closest together in solids. In liquids the spacing is close, however the particles have the freedom of movement. In gas, the particles have lots of kinetic energy, therefore they are far apart.
