Science is a kind of methodical exploration, which needs many different types of skill depending on the kind of thing being explored. There is a big difference between the type of work involved in say being an atomic physicist or astronomer and someone who collects and studies beetles in the jungles of Madasgasgar. One sits in a very advance technical laboratory or observatory, the other gets hot and wet and bitten by insects. Both are collecting data and studying it in different ways. So some of the skills are: being able to measure things in different ways, to do simple or advanced mathmatics, being able to understand physics, chemistry and biological principles. Being observant, questioning, full of wonderment at nature, being sceptical. being honest, and very patient.
