There are many practices that people apply when they have stammers and want to get rid of them. To understand the cause of the stammer, we can first look at the brain. Stammering occurs when a closed loop circuit is triggered in the brain. This closed loop causes a motor action to be instigated (like the start of a sentence) and then repeated (like a stammer).
The brain, however, can be rewired. So the closed circuit can be opened again so a person's speech can be changed. The brain rewires itself by repeating pleasurable or painful actions over and over until it the brain says, 'heck lets just switch these connections so I can do this action with as little effort as possible.'
Many people read out loud to get rid of their stutter. I read poems out loud so that I could sometimes predict what word would come at the end of a line and would have more confidence in what I was going to say even if it was only my first time reading. Reading out loud in front of close friends, siblings, parents, counselors anyone can help. You just have to start reading.
