Smelting: Mined out of the ground, raw ore is a mixture of materials called ore proper and loose earth called gangue (waste). The ore proper is separated by crushing the raw ore are simply washing away the lighter soil. Breaking down the ore from its impurities is more difficult.
Iron is the mineral. Iron is an element and as such, is not composed of any other materials, though iron ore comes out of the ground mixed with many other minerals. The ore must then be processed to extract the pure iron for practicle use.
That is highly possible if you find the correct mix of something like finely ground charcoal.
common well it depends on where you are Iron is common in most places and it is not uncommon for Iron ore to be mistaken for just orange to brownish colored rocks on the ground
In short, the iron ore hematite (Fe2O3). Iron is a raw material and you technically don't need to refine anything to get it. But because iron oxidizes (rusts) in the presence of oxygen, the iron ore must be heated and melted to remove the oxygen. During the process, the iron is usually mixed with carbon to increase it's strength. The end result is steel.

Use a magnet to extract the iron from the sulfur.
It comes from underground and we extract it by drilling a hole then by pumping it out of the ground
