Some cyanobacteria can do Nitrogen Fixation which is a process by which they transform atmospheric nitrogen into other nitrogenous compounds that plants use as nutrients. All organisms need nitrogen but only certain bacteria and cyanobacteria are capable of breaking the strong triple bond between atoms of atmospheric nitrogen. They do this with an enzyme called nitrogenase along with ATP, energized electrons and h2o (water) to convert atmospheric nitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3) which can be absorbed by plants and used to make proteins and other macromolecules.
